The driver, allegedly drunk behind the wheel, of a private bus that crushed three siblings at IT hub Hinjewadi was on Tuesday remanded in police custody till December 4 by a court in Pimpri.
Police said six-year-old Suraj Deva Prasad and her eight-year-old sister Archana were going home from school with elder sister Priya (16) when they were crushed by the bus on Monday.
Swapnil Jambhulkar (24), a Hinjewadi resident, lodged the FIR at the Hinjewadi police station. Police arrested bus driver Nagnath Rajabhau Gujar (33) of Bhosari, under Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) sections 105 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), 125 (a), 125 (b), 324 (4) 3 (5) and sections of the Motor Vehicle Act and Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act. His medical examination confirmed that he had consumed liquor while driving the bus, police said.
Also, the police have booked the owner of Maitreya Travels company, its sub-vendor and manager, along with the person responsible for safety checks of the bus driver Gujar, on charges of negligence.
As per the FIR, Gujar, after consuming liquor, was driving the Maitreya Travels bus from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Chowk towards Wakad bridge road. But he lost control due to which the bus strayed on footpath at the Pancharatna Chowk in Hinjewadi around 5.45 pm on Monday. The bus hit the victims, a two-wheeler, an electricity transformer and a hoarding at the spot, police said.
Suraj and Archana died on the spot. Their sister Priya was severely injured and succumbed later at a hospital.
Police sub-inspector Vikas Takmode said, “Suraj and Archana studied at a local zilla parishad school in Hinjewadi. Priya picked them up from school and they were walking home, but were killed in the mishap. They are survived by parents and two sisters. Their father runs a laundry.”
Also, police said a two-wheeler rider Haridas Chavan (26), pedestrians identified as Vimal Ozarkar (40) and Noor Alam, were injured in the mishap. They were rushed to a hospital for treatment. Vimal is a relative of complainant Jambhulkar, the FIR stated.
