Additional Sessions Judge V G Joshi on Thursday sentenced Vinod Ramesh Thorve (31) of Disli village in Mulshi taluka to life imprisonment and implosed a penalty of Rs 3,000 for killing his wife in 2008. Vinod’s mother Shobha (58) was sentenced to three-month imprisonment. She was released on bail. Vinod and his mother were accused of harassing the deceased,Rupali (22),for dowry.
On November 6,2008,the couple had a heated argument over the issue and Vinod got furious and strangulated Rupali to death. She had sustained 20 external injuries. Rupali’s father Gorakhnath Narayan Gangawane (50) of Karjat in Raigad district had lodged a complaint at Paud police station.
According to the prosecution,Vinod and Rupali had married two and half years prior to the incident. They have two daughters. Vinod was a rickshaw driver and he was not doing well in his business. He and his mother used to harass Rupali for money. They were demanding Rs 30,000 for rented premises and Rs 1 lakh for buying a new house. The duo also beat Rupali five days prior to the incident over the same issue.
Additional Public Prosecutor Ujjwala Pawar said,“Circumstantial and medical evidence proved vital in the conviction. Also,Vinod had told the witnesses that there was bickering between him and Rupali over food prepared in the afternoon on the day of the incident. We requested for leniency in Shobha’s sentence as there is no one to look after the two daughters.”
