Members of the Pune Cantonment Board (PCB) have asked the board to start house-to-house lifting of garbage on vehicles in the cantonment area at the earliest. PCB member Manzoor Sheikh said that the project was named ghantagadi and aimed at keeping the cantonment area clean.
We have asked the PCB to start collecting garbage with the help of vehicles, said PCB member Manzoor Nazir Sheikh. He added that though a resolution was passed last year for the collection of garbage with the help of vehicles but the work has not been started as yet. A PCB member said that elected members have proposed that the cantonment board hire a private agency which will be assigned the job of collecting garbage and then disposing it off scientifically.
The disposal of garbage is a big problem in the cantonment areas. The garbage bins overflow leading to pollution, added Sheikh. Cantonment board members said that though the PCB has banned scrap-dealing business in cantonment areas, those associated with the business carry it out illegally by scouting for scrap from garbage bins installed at different places. In a resolution which was adopted in the PCB meeting last year,it was proposed that the cantonment board will fix charges on residents within the cantonment area for disposal of garbage.
