The district administration has identified relatives of 40 families, whose 151 members have died in the Malin landslide tragedy in Ambegaon taluka. There are 37 families with relatives classified as “class 1” heirs, while three have “class 2” heirs, according to a survey by the district administration. The operation to retrieve bodies from concluded on Wednesday and the district administration has prepared a report of families and relatives of the deceased, to be forwarded to the state and central governments.
The compensation, Rs 5 lakh from the state and Rs 2 lakh from the centre, will be released, after the report is sent in a week’s time. “
“In our initial survey, we have been able to identify heirs among the families. However, this is a primary report as we would be sending our team again to confirm and get ready the final report once the amount is disbursed by the state and centre,” said SDO Ambegaon D Kavitake.
Around Rs 7.55 crore will be disbursed by the state government and Rs 3.02 crore by the central government. The cheques would be disbursed after confirmation. The district administration clarified that the compensation was only for families that lost lives and not for property loss.
The category of legal heirs is listed under the Hindu Succession Act for property transfer without a will. Class 1 heirs include sons, daughters, widows, mothers, grandson, son’s widow, great grandson and widow of grandson. Class 2 heirs include father, son’s daughter’s son, son’s daughter’s daughter, brother, sister and daughter’s son’s son, daughter’s son’s daughter, daughter’s daughter, brother’s son, sister’s son or brother’s daughter.
With most of the 40 families losing almost their entire family, heirs have to be confirmed with village panchayat samiti member”. “Modalities would be spelt out by the state government and only after the directive is given will the cheque be issued,” said an official.
The administration has to be cautious to check identity of relatives as there are huge amounts being disbursed. “It will take at least a week for the amount to be sanctioned. We would be doing a thorough check before issuing cheques and confirming with all members,” added the official.
