Madhur Bhandarkar
Television can’t get more real than this. Madhur Bhandarkar, known for his films that claim to depict the true face of our deteriorating society and culture, will appeal to a wider audience base to bring home his point.

Bhandarkar is currently busy wrapping up the shoot of his series,Heroine – Zindagi Ke Panno Se,before he begins filming his next film Jail. Strong and confident women are the protagonists and each will be the focus of one episode. “My series will have 12 episodes, each of which will be a short story inspired from real-life experiences that I have gathered over time. What better medium than television to take such stories to the masses?” While the series is being overseen by Bhandarkar, each episode will also have a sub-director.

Anurag Kashyap
It’s a case of coming full circle as the famed new-age director marks his return with Specials@10 on Sony. Anurag Kashyap’s work on Star Bestsellers on television had won him much acclaim then and an award too. And now, says the filmmaker,he wants to return to television with his tele-series Rajuben where the protagonist Rajshree marries a gangster and turns into one herself when her husband is murdered. “I don’t intend to make soap operas but as a filmmaker I feel the need to narrate such stories that cannot be told through three-hour films and television, with the flexibility and the reach, allows me to do so,” says Kashyap, who conceptualised the show amidst work on his recent release Dev.D and March-release Gulaal.

Zoya Akhtar
She may have taken time on her first project but post the success of Zoya Akhtar’s debut film,Luck by Chance, the director’s on a roll. The 35-year-old plans to work on a couple of scripts under her brother Farhan Akhtar’s Excel Entertainment banner, along with friend Reema Kagti. The production house now has plans to explore the television medium.

“There is nothing on Indian television to draw the youth and the quality suffers too. We would like to bring some intelligent programming to the medium,” Zoya says. The production house has a few concepts ready but is yet to approach the channels. While Zoya is intends to work on the project, other filmmakers associated with Excel Entertainment too, will be involved.

Mahesh Manjrekar
Specials @10 is merely an extension of the concept of short storytelling that Mahesh Manjrekar was part of in Dus Kahaniyaan. Though the filmmaker made his acting debut on television through a reality show and later also featured in the first episode of Monica Mogre Case Files, Har Kadam Par Shaque,a whodunit which is being shot in Manali,is his first directorial project in this medium.

Says the filmmaker about his first television project as a director,“I chose to work with the TV medium because the concept of the show, which is a mystery, works well here. Besides,I also thought it would be great to work with fresh talent because they often come up with great ideas and break the mould.”

Vikram Bhatt
If one attempts to draw a pattern out of filmmaker Vikram Bhatt’s work, the only common thread that runs through is diversity. “I have always been associated with the strange and the weird. So when Sony approached me to do a short series on television,I realised it’s a fabulous opportunity that will test my abilities in taut storytelling technique,” says the famed director.

His show,Shauhrat,Nafrat aur Showbiz, tells the story of a small town girl Sara, who dreams of stardom one day. The young girl puts her faith in an actor who misleads her. Sara, fighting all odds, becomes a supermodel but feels lonely at heart. What makes this project extra-special,says Bhatt,is the fact that he has collaborated with his 14-year-old daughter on script for the first time.
