They defeated BJP leader Raghunath Gowda and Sena leader Shirish Phadtare. The education board holds importance as it has control over the primary education in the city. The budget of the board is huge as it is responsible for providing free uniform, educational material and mid-day meal to the civic schools. During the previous tenure, the post of chairperson was held by Congress leader Sangeeta Tiwari as per the power-sharing formula between the NCP and Congress. The Congress insisted to hold the posts this time too but the NCP refused citing majority in the civic body. The NCP will hold the post for first three years and hand over the charge to Congress for last two years. In order to keep Congress away from implementing the scheme of distributing uniforms and education material in civic schools, the ruling NCP had not signed the education budget approved by the civic body saying it will be implemented only by the new body. The controversy led to delay in distribution of material to students despite the schools starting a month ago.
