Maj Gen Chacko Tharakan,MG IC Adam Southern Command,on Friday,inaugurated a week-long celebration of environmental protection and conservation in the Dehu Road military station and cantonment,on the occasion of World Environment Day.
Speaking on the occasion,Tharakan said,Environmental protection is crucial and the Army will be at the forefront of the efforts to conserve and protect the environment. The steps taken by Dehu Road station and cantonment in preserving ecology are commendable.
Earlier,station commander,Dehu Road station and cantonment,Brig R S Rathore,said Sant Tukarams teachings were environment-friendly and highly relevant in the present times. Sant Tukarams fourth birth centenary is being celebrated in Maharashtra and in Dehu Road in particular,the birthplace of the renowned Sant.
Various NGOs and companies such as Bharat Earth Movers Ltd have extended help for the cause of the environment, Rathore said. Asheesh Sharma,Commissioner Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation,was present at the function.
The weeklong programme includes a tree plantation drive,cleanliness and awareness drive,environmental seminar and various competitions including a childrens Run for fun. The celebration will end on June 11 with a Paryavaran Mela,which will have stalls put up addressing various environmental issues,a press note said.
