The Dehu Road Cantonment Board (DRCB) has inked an agreement with a private agency for collection of octroi,vehicle-entry tax and transit fee. From Friday, the taxes will be collected by the agency instead of DRCB.
Officials of the cantonment board will only supervise the collection of taxes and the manpower will be deployed by the private agency for the collection of taxes. The private agency that has been awarded the bids will deploy about 45 people for tax collection. Office Superintendent of the Cantonment Board,N M Mahajani, said the pact was finalised in a board meeting on Wednesday.
In all,the amount will be paid in 52 installments by the agency. The amount will only be accepted in cheques, Mahajani said, adding that the agreement was signed between the authorised signatory of the private agency in the meeting attended by the President of Cantonment Board,CEO as well other members. The collections will be at different booths that have been set up, he said.
He said the tax collection will be done round-the-clock by the personnel who have been deployed by the private agency. A list has been received and police verification is to be done to prevent discrepancies and allegations of high handedness by the collectors.
The move to privatise the collections is to make the tax revenue of the board buoyant and follows the increase in the rate of octroi, transit fee and vehicle entry fee by the board recently. The board has kept the maximum octroi of 6 per cent on the transportation of the liquor in its jurisdiction and the octroi rate ranges between 3-6 per cent.
