DCP Karnik injured at Mumbai firing range

DCP Sandeep Karnik,who is facing a magisterial inquiry after the police firing at Maval near Pune,sustained a minor injury in his left hand while practicing with a rifle at a firing range in Ghatkopar on Monday.

DCP Sandeep Karnik,who is facing a magisterial inquiry after the police firing at Maval near Pune,sustained a minor injury in his left hand while practicing with a rifle at a firing range in Ghatkopar on Monday.

According to the police,Karnik was injured while practising with a new M5 short-range rifle on Monday morning. DCP Sanjay Shintre said Karnik is currently deployed in the Special Branch and is also heading the Quick Respose Team (QRT).

A finger on Karnik’s left hand was injured due to the strong recoil of the weapon during target practice.

“Karnik was taken to a hospital for first aid and is undergoing treatment,” said Quaiser Khalid,Additional Police Commissioner of East region.

In August,three farmers were killed and one seriously injured when the police opened fire to disperse agitating farmers at Maval on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway.

A magisterial inquiry is underway into the firing that took place under the supervision of Karnik,who was then SP (Pune Rural). Subsequently,Karnik sought a transfer and was shifted to Mumbai.
