Shrikant Deshpande dies of cancer; was grandson of Pt Bhimsens Guru Sawai Gandharva
Days after Pt Bhimsen Joshi passed away, his Kirana Gharana disciple, veteran vocalist Pt Shrikant Deshpande died of pancreatic cancer at Dinanath Mangeshkar Hospital on Saturday.
Deshpande,62,the grandson of Pandit Bhimsen Joshis Guru Sawai Gandharva, was declared dead at 10.25 am. Incidentally,Deshpande was admitted to Dinanath Mangeshkar Hospital on January 24,the day the ailing Pandit Joshi died.
Pandit Deshpande, who took formal training in Indian classical music from Pt Bhimsen and Pt Firoze Dastur, was a veteran singer with Akashvani as well as Doordarshan. With his special expertise in Abhangas,a genre Pandit Bhimsen made popular among common Maharashtrian households,Pt Deshpande was the secretary of the Arya Sangeet Prasarak Mandal and was instrumental in effectively organising the Sawai Gandharva music festival.
Pt Deshpande was detected with stage four of pancreatic cancer about four months ago and since then has been in and out of hospital.
A number of personalities from various fields mainly music and art, including Pandit Suhas Vyas,Pt Suresh Talwalkar,Ustad Saiduddin Dagar,Anand Deshmukh, visited Pt Deshpandes residence located off the Jungli Maharaj road.
This is tragic. It is as if the disciple followed the guru. Two vocalists of the Kirana Gharana are no more and this puts a great responsibility on the shoulders of the younger disciples of the Gharana, said famous Dhrupad singer Ustad Saiduddin Dagar.
