Impact of Cyclone Ditwah in Pune: Marginally warmer days and nights begin

Pune’s winter chill has eased as Cyclones Senyar and Ditwah disrupted cold northerly winds, raising both day and night temperatures. IMD expects clearer skies but warmer weather through early December.

Until mid-November, Pune was looking set to welcome a cool, shivery winter. Woollens returned to fashion as temperatures began to fall by the day and the night. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had even issued an alert for a cold wave in isolated parts of the state, including Pune, mid-November.

On November 28, Pune and neighbourhoods recorded a warm 29 degree Celsius maximum temperature while the minimum was 15 °C. In parts of the city, such as Lohegaon and Lavale, the maximum was marginally higher, at 31°C. It is likely to become warmer as the week progresses.

“The minimum temperature is expected to reach 17°C by December 3 and 4, when the maximum temperature is likely to be 32°C,” says IMD. While Pune is likely to experience mainly clear sky over the weekend, partly cloudy conditions are expected once December begins.

The cyclonic effects

Cyclone Senyar, which developed over the Bay of Bengal earlier this week, prevented the northerly winds that bring cold air into the state to be cut off. The partly cloudy sky trapped the sun’s heat from the day well into the night and raised the night-time temperature.

The result was that the temperature in the city began to rise – the night temperature went from 9.4 °C November 18 and 19 to 11 °C on November 20. The days, too, became warmer – 27.9 °C on November 18 to 29.7 on November 20.

Though Senyar has now weakened and moved away, another low-pressure system in the Bay of Bengal intensified into Cyclonic Storm Ditwah, which is likely to impact the temperature of Pune and its neighbourhoods.

“It is likely to be partly cloudy in Pune, with the night temperature likely to rise marginally on November 29 and 30,” said Anupam Kashyapi, former head of weather forecasting at IMD.

Kashyapi adds that the marginal rise in night temperature is likely due to moisture incursion in association with cyclonic storm Ditwah. “Cyclonic storm Ditwah is expected to move North- Northwestwards and might reach North Tamil Nadu and South and Central Andhra Pradesh by November 30. As a result, isolated light rainfall is likely in districts of South Maharashtra even in Vidarbha, among others,” he said.
