Cummings digs deep to upset Gokhale

The tournament is being played at the PYC Gymkhana tennis courts.

Unseeded Christian Cummings came back from being four matchpoints down to win a 110-minute marathon tussle against top-seed Aditya Gokhale to enter the quarter-finals of the boys singles at the fifth edition of the P&S Janvas Trophy Om Dalvi Memorial under-18 Championship Series National Ranking Tennis tournament. The tournament is being organized under the auspices of the All India Tennis Association and the Maharashtra State Lawn Tennis Association. The tournament is being played at the PYC Gymkhana tennis courts.

Cummings scored a 2-4,5-4(5),12-10 win on his home courts. Rallying back after comprehensively losing the first set,he stretched the second to the tie-break and then both players played a marathon third,with Cummings edging it 12-10.

In the other upsets of the day,unseeded Yash Agarwal trounced sixth seeded Dhruv Vyas of Gujarat 4-0,4-2. Vaishnav Bondalam of Andhra Pradesh upset seventh seeded state mate Siddarth Ponnala 4-2,4-0. Another Andhra lad Annirudh Yadav stopped 12th seeded Rajan Guhan of Tamil Nadu 4-2,4-0 to enter the quarterfinals.

In the girls’ singles,Mysore native Varunya Chandrashekar continued her winning spree upsetting fourth seeded Megha Muthukumaran of Tamil Nadu 4-2,4-1 to enter the semifinals. Second seed Sai Nikitha,seventh seed Neharika Rama of Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra’s Ishwari Seth also registered victories and progressed to the next round.
