Kondhwa police arrested a gang of four youths involved in cell phone thefts and recovered as many as 106 smart phones, worth Rs 10 lakh. The arrested are Pradip Vasant Betkari (20), Anil Anant Betkari (20), Kiran Rama Wadar (18) and Maruti Yallapa Betkari (22), all residents of Ghorpadi.
Acting on a tip-off from constable Ganesh Kshirsagar, a team of Kondhwa police station led by sub inspector Nitin Atkare laid a trap and nabbed the four youths in Kondhwa market at around 8 pm on Friday.
Cops initially recovered 16 smart phones from their possession and during further investigation, a total of 106 smart phones were recovered.
Deputy commissioner of police (Zone IV) Sudhir Hiremath said that each phone costs more than Rs 12,000. The suspects have stolen phones from people in market places in Bhosari, Hadapsar, Kondhwa, Wnavdi, Chandan Nagar, Yerwada, Pimpri Chinchwad and Sangvi.
Probe revealed that the youths moved together, targetting people in crowded shops and vegetable markets. Police said that Anil had done a course from ITI, while the others are school dropouts who worked at a vadapav stall.
The four were produced before a magistrate court on Saturday, which remanded them to police custody for a day. Probe is on to know to whom they were selling the stolen cell phones and whether any others are associated with them.
