Three days after 27-year-old Rupali Andhare allegedly committed suicide in her room at the Manora MLA Hostel in Cuffe Parade, the police are yet to ascertain what led her to take the extreme step.
Police said Rupali was depressed. They have filed an accidental death report in accordance with routine procedure in suicide cases.
According to Rupalis brother, failure to find a permanent job and get married were the reasons for her depression. Rupali had come to Mumbai with her younger brother,Ganesh,to meet their maternal uncle,Dilip Dhaigunde, who is personal assistant to NCP MLA Babanrao Shinde. Rupali was staying in Room 26 in the B wing of the hostel.
In his statement to the Cuffe Parade police,Dhaigunde said Andhares father had also committed suicide 20 years ago while her mother had died of cancer a couple of years ago.
This left Rupali, the eldest of three children,to look after her two younger brothers. Ganesh said that the added responsibility had contributed to her depression.
We have found no discrepancies in their statements and are verifying everything they have said. A team of officers will go to her village in Solapur and locate people to whom she may have shared her anxieties with, said Ravindra Shisve,DCP ( Zone 1).
Rupali,a native of Barshi,Solapur, was found hanging by a dupatta from the ceiling fan in her second floor room Saturday night.
Dhaigunde said he and Ganesh had gone out. When Rupali did not open the door for a long time, they got suspicious and found her hanging through the window. They informed PWD officers in the building and forced open the door with their help, said Shisve. Dhaigunde had booked return tickets for Saturday night for them, he added.
