The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has admitted that the part of the construction on the 13th floor that caved in on Friday, killing nine workers in Balewadi, was illegal as the permission was given only for construction of 12 floors.
In a written statement, the civic administration said that the construction work of the slab casting of the 13th floor of the building in the residential complex Park Xpress began on Friday.
“The PMC would conduct an inquiry into the illegal construction and initiate action against the developer and architect. There would also be a probe, looking into any negligence on part of the civic staff of the area,” said Municipal Commissioner Kunal Kumar.
The PMC has issued a ‘stop work’ order for the ongoing constructions in the residential complex. According to the civic administration, the first layout for the residential complex was approved in 2003 for construction of four buildings in 17,000 sq metre area, which was revised by the developer in 2009 for construction of five buildings in 35,700 sq metre plot. The plan was later revised and was sanctioned many times. The latest revision was in December 2015 for construction in 60,500 sq metre area, which included 13 buildings.
