Congress to go solo in PMC polls amid NCP reunification buzz

In the wake of both the NCPs joining hands for the civic polls, the leader said the Maharashtra Congress is of the opinion to keep a distance from them to maintain its secular identity, like that in Mumbai.

While a section of party leaders from the city said they are in favour of a tie-up with Ajit Pawar’s NCP, others said those looking to contest in the PMC elections should be “given justice”.In Mumbai, the Shiv Sena (UBT) and MNS have forged an alliance for the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections (File Photo)

In the likely event of the two NCP factions coming together in Pune even as the Ajit Pawar-led NCP is in alliance with the BJP at the state and national level, the Pune Congress has taken a cue from its Mumbai counterpart and decided to fight solo the Pune Municipal Corporation elections scheduled to be held next month.

A delegation of the Pune Congress held discussion with the party’s top brass in Mumbai on Thursday about the political situation in the city. “The NCP(SP) is joining hands with Ajit Pawar-led NCP for the Pune civic polls. The local Congress leaders were pulled up for joining the discussion of pre-poll alliance in which Ajit Pawar’s NCP was involved as it is an ally of BJP,” said a Congress leader.

In the wake of both the NCPs joining hands for the civic polls, the leader said the Maharashtra Congress is of the opinion to keep a distance from them to maintain its secular identity, like that in Mumbai.

In Mumbai, the Shiv Sena (UBT) and MNS have forged an alliance for the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections. The Congress there declared it would contest the elections independently, without the Maha Vikas Aghadi banner, and join hands with Rashtriaya Samaj Paksh (RSP).

In Pune, the BJP and Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena have forged an alliance for the civic polls while the Ajit Pawar-led NCP is joining hands with NCP(SP). The Shiv Sena (UBT) and MNS is likely to contest the Pune civic elections in alliance.

The Congress held sway over Pune till 2007, after which the NCP dominated politics in the civic corridors. Then, the BJP retained its monopoly in the city politics since 2017. The Congress had nine corporators before the five-year term of the PMC ended in 2022.
