Facing a tough challenge in the forthcoming Lok Sabha polls, the Congress is falling back on its women wing in Maharashtra to woo women voters by reaching out to them with government decisions that are in their interest. However, the women wing too has sought candidature for at least six of the 26 Lok Sabha seats to be contested by the party in the state.

“We are inspired by the confidence shown by party vice-president Rahul Gandhi on the women wing of the party. He has urged women to get active and fight for equal share in politics,” said state women Congress chief Kamal Vyavhare.

The aggressive work by women party workers has also caught the eye of many probables as the demand for holding women’s rallies is on the rise across the state. The women Congress had recently held rallies at Nanded, Sindhudurg, Wardha and Chandrapur. “Almost all parliament constituencies in the state, where the party is to contest as per the seat-sharing arrangement with the NCP, have urged for holding women’s rally,” she said, adding the women’s wing has also planned a grand presence at Rahul’s rally in Aurangabad on Wednesday.

“The women wing has urged for at least one seat for women in each of the six divisions of the state. Priya Dutt is the only woman Lok Sabha MP from Congress in the state, while there are many more who can make it to LS and work efficiently,” Vyavhare said further staking her claim for a party ticket for Pune LS seat.

Vyavhare said to gear up for the polls, the women’s wing has set up a network of its workers across the state and there is at least one woman worker in 4,200 villages of the state who updates other women on the issues in their respective areas. The formation of booth committee is complete and everyone is rearing to work for electing the party candidate.

In January, the district units of the party women wing organised awareness campaigns for party workers so that they reach out to each household and communicate the achievements of the Congress-led government. “There are so many women-centric decisions taken by the Congress government at the state and Central level. These will be conveyed to women voters,” she said.
