The Urban Community Development (UCD) department of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC),rated among the most efficient in civic body after its head was given a free hand in 2001 to execute schemes and programmes, has now come under the scanner of elected representatives. The Women and Child Welfare Committee, fighting to exercise its power, has withdrawn the powers given to municipal commissioner 12 years ago for implementation of schemes.
The committee realised that the only proposals that were tabled were construction and demolition of toilets. There is a budgetary provision for implementation of various schemes that come under the jurisdiction of committee. The committee was merely being informed about the schemes, said Meenal Saravade, chairperson of the Women and Child Welfare Committee.
We want to know the exact usage of the budget in implementation of schemes. It was unanimously decided to pass a resolution on withdrawing the decision-making powers over proposals related to various departments, Saravade said.
There are at least one lakh beneficiaries of the schemes implemented by the UCD. It will be difficult for the committee to go through all the proposals, said Dnyaneshwar Molak, joint municipal commissioner (UCD).
From now on,any resolution will need to have the approval of the standing committee and general body for it to come into effect.
