College principal Rajendra Zunjarrao says the collection specifically includes books on career guidance and premarital counselling.

Latika Gosawi,a third-year student of Bachelor of Computer Science from Modern College of Arts,Science and Commerce,is busy reading ‘Wise & Otherwise’,a book penned by Sudha Murthy, author and Chairperson,Infosys Foundation, these days. And she already feels her ideas about life and career have become clearer now.

“I have a feeling of gaining new wisdom and confidence after reading the book,” says Latika, thanking her college to start this one-of-its kind ‘literary movement’ to empower its girl students.

As part of the initiative, the college has set up a dedicated library section in the girls’ common room where books that can inspire girls and bring positive attitudinal changes have been kept.

“We have a huge library in our college, but a dedicated section of it has been deliberately raised in the girls’ common room. This particular section houses more than 200 books. It primarily includes biographies and autobiographies of successful women of all times, books on women issues and those guiding girl students on personality development and career management. The collection also includes women magazines and periodicals among other literature. The idea is to offer read that would enrich our girl students to ensure their all round development,” says college librarian Madhuri Datre.

The girl students, who are part of the University of Pune’s earn-and-learn scheme, look after the library.

“Besides voluminous books,we have included booklets throwing light on various topics and subjects. The idea is to ensure girls read the literature meant for them without any time constraint. Every day, many girls take benefit of these books and reading material, which are no doubt shaping their minds,” adds Datre.

“So many career options are available before girls today… A proper knowledge of this is must to grab different opportunities, and through our literary movement we spread updated knowledge among girls. Also, marriage is next important big thing in the life of girls after studies. The process of globalisation is having its tangible and intangible effects on marriage and family system as a whole. In these changing times,we want our girl students to not go astray and take harmful decisions. The books on premarital counselling will surely take care of this concern,” says Zunjarrao.

The college has plans to make regular addition to the collection so that more and more girls benefit from it.

“Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body, they say. On the same lines,we are developing healthy minds and all-round personalities to reach new heights of success, and at the same time evolve as great human beings,” says Manasi Dongaokar,a student.
