Workshop for teachers
Providing teachers with professional development opportunities Victorious Kidss Educares invited Dr Sue Lyle,from Swansea Metropolitan University,Swansea,Wales to conduct workshops on Developing Reflective Practice and Action Research. Dr Lyle is an educator since 1975 and for the past 19 years in higher education as a teacher educator. She is currently the head of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) at Swansea Metropolitan University and specialises in leading whole school workshops. It was held at Victorious Kidss Educares on April 11 and 12. This teachers’ workshop was focused on improving learning by identifying problems to be solved in their own school/classroom and to reflect on their own values in education the role of the teacher in children’s learning. It focused on the belief that teaching should be a research-based profession and research is a part and parcel of what it means to be a teacher. 60 teachers participated in the workshop and learned various strategies which they can implement in their classes to make the children more thoughtful and reflective learners.

Astronomy year
Mit’s- Gurukulians Astrophysics Club (GAC) –a club launched in November 2007,is on the line of dreams with extensive plans to celebrate the Astronomy year- 2009. This International Year of Astronomy – 2009(IYA),is an initiative by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) and the MIT’s- Gurukulians Astrophysics Club (GAC) of Vishwashanti Gurukul School (VGS),at Rajbaug. On April 10 forty members of Gurukulians Astrophysics Club (GAC) visited the Nehru Science Centre and the Nehru Planetarium at Mumbai. Students watched the movies on Stars and Mars Exploration at the Planetarium with a unique experience had at the Science Odyssey,a spherical dome projection theatre. The members of GAC also played with all exhibits of mechanics. It was the beginning of many more programmes on the cards. IYA- MIT’s GAC has plans to celebrate the historical moment of the first astronomical telescope by Galileo,an invention initiated 400 years of incredible astronomical discoveries.

Global education
Genteel School of Business and Economics (GSBE) in the city and Rushmore Business School Mauritius (RBS) have signed a MOU bringing British education to the students at an affordable cost . The students of GSBC can pursue EDEXCEL,UK accredited management course through RBS and acquire internationally valid certification. RBS has selected GSBC as a supporting institution,which facilitates the latter’s students to be awarded qualifications from RBS partner institutions. All RBS courses are approved by Tertiary education Commission and Mauritius Qualification Authority.

International Learning
Smoothening the path for Cambridge students who want to progress to Pune University,the University of Pune has announced that students holding Cambridge International A Level qualifications from University of Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) are equivalent to XII std of Maharashtra state board of secondary and higher secondary education (Government of Maharashtra). On April 15,Ian Chambers held a seminar for parents at Bishops School to give them an overview of the Cambridge International Curriculum. Bishops School is introducing Cambridge programmes this year. CIE is part of the Cambridge Assessment Group,a not-for-profit organization and part of the University of Cambridge. Ian Chambers,CIE’s Regional Manager for South Asia,said,“CIE holds regular meetings with educational institutions in India to ensure that progression pathways are opened for Cambridge students. Cambridge qualifications are recognised around the world,and give students an excellent preparation for university success.”

Dancing through success
Celebrating the completion of its February – March 09 batches from centers across the city Team Flames held a show where dancers put up a dazzling performance,followed by a salsa item by Tannushree Rakshit of Jahlak Dikhlaja fame. students from the age group of 6 to 30 years danced their way to beats of some famous salsa and dance numbers like La Izla Bonita. There were special performances where they picked spectators from the audience and made them dance to salsa numbers along with steps of Salsa,Boogie,Cha Cha,Jive,Rumba,Samba,and Line Dance.Present on the occasion were celebrity guests including Dilip Chhabria,Dr. Koppikar- Head of Oncology Dept of Jehangir and Nathani of Cybage. Certificates were also handed over to all the participants who had graduated.
