In view of the scarcity prevailing in the state,District Collector Vikas Deshmukh has banned use of drinking water for construction projects.
In an order issued on Tuesday,Deshmukh said tehshildars have been asked to keep an eye on how water is being used and take action on people who are found wasting or misusing it.
The next two months would be crucial. Keeping in view the drought situation in the state, conservation of water is important. Already, municipal commissioners of Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad have issued similar orders stopping misuse of drinking water. This order would be useful in the 11 municipal councils, where a lot of construction activities are happening, he said. Other than slapping fines on violators, tehshildars can order suspension of the construction work for a few days if drinking water is used at the sites.
Meanwhile, after the collectors appeal for help in drought-hit areas, many NGOs and private citizens are pitching in with water tanks, machinery and water tankers. Around 600 Syntex tanks have been installed in villages and many NGOs have started work on nullah cleaning and other works. We held a meeting with the builders association and they have expressed willingness to help us with machinery in the villages, he said.
