In view of threats from naxals and criminals, especially in industrial areas, District Collector Vikas Deshmukh has made it mandatory for all industries to register details of migrant labourers at police stations. At a recent meeting,he said that all labourers should register with the police station.
The data should be with the police and we will collate the information, said an industries department official. Last year, the collector had made it mandatory for all migrant workers to submit their identification proof at police stations. However, the industries department is yet to have any collated information on the total number of migrant workers.
The industries department is also collating information on the total number of locals employed in the area. There is a fear of legal action in case of failure to comply with the directive. So,the labourers are submitting their information, said a district official.
The directive had come in the wake of the police arresting people from Pune district, who worked as labourers and were suspected to be naxalites. Due to rapid industrialisation,Pune has witnessed a spurt in the number of migrants, particularly unskilled workers.
In the order that was issued last year, the information required to be furnished are name of the worker, permanent and present addresses, photographs, finger prints, phone numbers, and reference of two local residents and two persons from their native places. The collector has also made it mandatory for house owners in rural areas to submit photo identities of their tenants.
At the meeting, the collector also approved the setting up of police stations in at Ranjangaon,Mhalunge-Chakan,Patas Kurkumbh,Ale and Supa.
