CMO should have Sharad Pawar’s letter blaming Fadnavis govt for Koregaon Bhima violence: Uddhav Thackeray

Ambedkar's lawyer Kiran Kadam said he would be soon filing a fresh application requesting the commission to issue a notice to the CMO for producing the said letter.

Uddhav Thackeray, Sharad Pawar, Prakash Ambedkar, Devendra Fadnavis, Koregaon Bhima violence, Pune news, Pune, Maharashtra news, Indian express, current affairsThackeray stated in the affidavit that during his tenure as CM of Maharashtra (November 2019 to June 2022) a transparent administrative procedure was followed to maintain records of all official documents and letters in his name in the capacity of chief minister at the CMO.

Former Maharashtra Chief Minister and Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray submitted an affidavit before the Koregaon Bhima Commission of Inquiry through his lawyer Asim Sarode on Thursday, in connection with an application filed by Dalit leader Prakash Ambedkar.

Ambedkar had filed an application before the commission in February last year, claiming that Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Sharad Pawar, on January 24, 2020, gave a letter to then CM Uddhav Thackeray, saying the violence (in Koregaon Bhima on January 1, 2018) was a conspiracy hatched by the previous government under the leadership of Devendra Fadnavis.

However, in his affidavit, Thackeray submitted that if Sharad Pawar had given such a letter, it should be in the Chief Minister’s Office(CMO). “I am not the CM now. So it would be appropriate to seek this letter from the current chief minister Devendra Fadnavis and the CMO,” Thackeray stated.

Ambedkar’s lawyer Kiran Kadam said he would be soon filing a fresh application requesting the commission to issue a notice to the CMO for producing the said letter.

Ambedkar had along with his application attached a news report stating that Pawar’s letter to Thackeray demanded the formation of a special investigation team (SIT) to probe the Koregaon-Bhima violence and accused the Fadnavis government of protecting the conspirators.

Ambedkar initially requested the commission to pass an order directing Sharad Pawar to submit a copy of the letter given to Thackeray, along with the related documents. But in August last year, Pawar informed the commission that he did not have a copy of this letter.

The commission further allowed Ambedkar’s application seeking the said letter and related documents from Thackeray. Accordingly, Thackeray filed his affidavit before the commission through advocate Sarode. Its copy was given to Ambedkar’s lawyer Kiran Kadam.

Thackeray stated in the affidavit that during his tenure as CM of Maharashtra (November 2019 to June 2022) a transparent administrative procedure was followed to maintain records of all official documents and letters in his name in the capacity of chief minister at the CMO. “So if Sharad Pawar had given me any letter regarding the Koregaon Bhima violence, it should be there in the CMO,” Thackeray stated.

The two-member commission led by retired High Court judge Justice J N Patel was formed to probe into the violence in the Koregaon Bhima area in Pune on January 1, 2018, in which one person had died, and several others were left injured. Former chief secretary Sumit Mallick is the second member of the commission.

Meanwhile, on Thursday, advocate M V Deshmukh of Vadhu Budruk gram panchayat and advocate Rohan Jamadar cross-examined retired IAS officer Vishwas Patil about his novel “Sambhaji”, based on the life of legendary king Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj.

Referring to the mention Govind Mahar performing last rites of Sambhaji Maharaj in the novel, Deshmukh told Patil that his “imaginary narration of the cremation of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj is different from the historical facts and customs of village Vadhu Budruk.”

Patil denied it saying, “it is expected of a novelist to blend documented history with imaginative storytelling giving artistic life to historical events.”

Vadhu Budruk is a historic village (located about 4 kms from Koregaon Bhima), known for the samadhi of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj. The village also has a disputed tomb-like structure, which, according to the Dalit Mahar community, is the samadhi of Govind Gopal Dhegoji Meghoji, a 17thcentury figure.

Citing an old memorial of ‘Bapuji’ and ‘Padmavati Shivale’ in the village, Marathas from Vadhu Budruk believe it was their ancestors, the Shivale Deshmukhs, who had defied the orders of Aurangzeb and performed the last rites of Sambhaji Maharaj after he was killed by the Mughal emperor in 1689.

Whereas the Dalit Mahar community claims that Govind Gopal performed the last rites of the king. A board with the ‘disputed history’ of Govind Gopal erected in Vadhu Budruk on the intervening night of December 28 and 29, 2017, had led to an altercation, which was seen as one of the triggers for Koregaon Bhima violence on January 1.
