A 16-year-old school student died of electrocution after he came in contact with a wire fence in the Shivane area of Pune on Tuesday morning. This is the second such incident in Pune in the last one week.

The deceased was identified as Shubham Balu Pawar, a resident of Shinde Pul, and a student of Class 10 of Navbharat High School in Shivane, a police officer said. Around 11 am on Tuesday, Shubham was on his way to meet a friend from the school when the incident took place.

“Initial probe suggests that he came in contact with a wire fence of a residential building in a small alley in Deshmukhwadi area and received an electric shock. Some local residents rushed him to a hospital where he was pronounced dead,” said an officer from Uttam Nagar police station. The police have registered a case of accidental death.

Sub-inspector Shubhangi Pawar from Uttam Nagar police station who is probing the case, said, “Preliminary investigation points to death by electric shock. We have sought a report from the electrical inspectors based on which the further course of action will be decided.”

On June 24, a 30-year-old man working as a painter died of electrocution after he came in contact with a wire fence of a residential society at Kondhwa in Pune where he had stopped to take shelter during rain.

The electrical inspection falls under the purview of the Chief Electrical Inspector’s office from the Department of Industrial, Energy and Labour of the Government of Maharashtra. It is an entity independent from the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL).
