Mayor Vaishali Bankar and Rajya Sabha MP Vandana Chavan on Monday announced that the civic body will soon declare a green plan that will ensure systematic implementation of tree plantation drives across the city. They also rapped the civic administration for not putting in adequate efforts to increase green cover.
The PMC and forest department have been jointly working towards protecting green cover in the city. Though the efforts of the forest department are visible, there is nothing that civic administration is doing to achieve the objective, said Chavan while addressing a press conference.
She said the administration has been only announcing tree plantation drive but in reality nothing much is being done. The civic administration admitted that the green cover in the city is 13-14 per cent as against the 33 per cent norms. There need to be 29 lakh trees in the city but there is a shortage of around 7 lakh trees. We want to fill up the gap in next five years, Chavan said.
She added that the situation of gardens and dividers is not as per expectations. The PMC has no proper planning to increase the green cover or maintaining the existing one. We want a plan in place that will be executed, Chavan said.
Bankar said the administration has been asked to prepare a detailed plan by taking up tree plantation drive on the vacant plots. The plan will be released by me on August 15, she said, adding that it would be implemented with the help of public.
The civic body will also slowly start replacing Gliricidia plants that are in abundance on the city hills,Bankar said.
She added that the life of the species has ended and the objective of its plantation has been fulfilled. The tree will be slowly replaced by replanting local species, she added.
