The much awaited venture of the postal department into the segment of core banking will begin this month. Colonel K C Mishra, postmaster general of Maharashtra and Goa,while addressing mediapersons in Pune on Wednesday, said the first postal ATMs will be set up in the city in March, next year.

He added that owing to the Rs 4,909-crore grant received from the Planning Commission, the postal department embarked on an ambitious scheme of core banking and other initiatives.

Infosys is the partner for the core banking concept, while TCS will help the department change what Mishra called the “mindset” of the employees. Sify will help the department undertake system integration.

“By March, the state will have as many as 1,000 postal ATMs in Pune,Pandharpur,Satara and Phaltan. In the city, the department has more than 20 lakh accounts,” he said. The network of over 1 lakh post offices will be integrated by 2018.

Speaking about the business involving post offices,he said from April the department had dispensed Rs 1,800 crore in wages of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNRES). “The state government was disbursing wages under the scheme through banks, post offices and cooperative credit societies. The commissioner of MGNREGA recently said the reach and reliability of the postal department had proved invaluable and the government would rely on us more for wage disbursal,” Mishra added.

The data center for the postal department,he said would be set up in Navi Mumbai and would be ready soon. In accordance with the changes in the department, the Chiplun post office will also be ready soon for electronic transfer of funds for the social security schemes like pension of the central government.

Another project in the pipeline for the department is the tracking of ordinary post in line with speed and registered post. The 2-D tracking codes will be added on normal letters, which would be used for tracking.

S R Meena, postmaster general of Pune, said the Hadapsar post office would be upgraded soon in line with the Shivajinagar post office.
