City-based Khagol Vishwa group will take students from Pune on a study tour to the Lonar meteorite crater in Buldana district in the first week of April.
The maximum number of studies on Lonar meteorite has come from Pune. We have been tracking this meteorite for the past many years, which is why we thought we should take students to study Lonar, said group coordinator Mayuresh Prabhune.
The meteorite crater is 2 km in diameter, part of which has been formed into a salty lake. Scientists took time to establish that this was a crater formed due to an impact with a meterorite as no remnants of a meteorite were found at the crater. The cause of the crater at Buldana was established after several other experiments were conducted.
In the first week of April,Khagol Vishwa and Lonar Mitra Mandal will hold a function at the site, wherein the students will interact with scientists. The students will return to the site in the coming months. Eventually, they will push for world heritage site status for the crater, said Prabhune.
