According to the new rule issued by Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC),priority will be given to theatre and drama events over commercial events on Saturdays,Sundays and other holidays. Additional Municipal Commissioner Naresh Zurmure said,These auditoriums were initially started for the promotion of art and culture through drama and musicals. Later on,the auditoriums started holding various cultural events. It was noted that because of these events, theatre groups were being sidelined. Thus, last week,a decision was taken that except on week days, all the PMC-run auditoriums will give priority to theatre events over commercial ones. There has been no change in the charges.
Zurmure said the change will be included in the software and will be reflected in the online booking for auditoriums within three-four days. He says that the online booking facility, which was started last month, has received a great response. The collection from the last months online booking was Rs 94,000. Some auditoriums that come under PMC are Yashwantrao Chavan Natyagruha,Balgandharva Rang Mandir,Ganesh Kala Krida Mandal,Moulana Abul Kalam Azad Auditorium and Ambedkar Sanskrutik Bhavan.
Earlier, people would prefer only popular auditoriums while other halls remained empty. Now,even the organisers who want to stage a play will have a wide choice, said Zurmure. Besides,he said, theatrical plays have a thinner audience on week days.
However, the concept of online booking hasnt gone down well with auditorium managements. Amar Pardeshi, manager,Balgandharva Rang Mandir, said,We gave priority to cultural functions over commercial events earlier, too. Now that anyone book the auditorium at the click of the mouse, chances are that theatre-related events may get a raw deal as the the dates would get blocked.
Zurmure said,The online facility is fair to everyone. It will bring about transparency in the management. If a date is available online, then the auditorium cannot refuse the party.
