Chemical tanker leak triggers panic

Police said the tanker was carrying the chemical from a Mumbai-based firm to Chikhli. The brushing past of an unknown vehicle caused a crack in the tanker and the chemical started leaking.

An unidentified vehicle brushed past a chemical tanker between Dehu Road and Nigdi on Tuesday leading to the leakage of chemical Vinyl Acetate Monomer from the tanker. The chemical spread over the area,leading to a panic for some time.

Fire brigade and police teams rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control. The chemical was filled in containers after the leakage was plugged.

Police said the tanker was carrying Vinyl Acetate Monomer from a Mumbai-based firm to Chikhli in Pimpri-Chinchwad.

The brushing past of the vehicle caused a crack in the tanker and the chemical leaked out,they added. The foul odour of the chemical spread over Chikhli,Nigdi and Dehu Road.

A fire brigade official said the leakage was stopped after an hour. Vinyl Acetate Monomer is used in making several industrial and consumer products.
