The gram panchayats of Chakan and Rajgurunagar and Panchayat Samitis recently passed a resolution to get municipal council status for these areas
With only three objections to Chakan and Rajgurunagar gram panchayats being made municipal councils coming in,and the gram panchayats unanimously agreeing to the proposal earlier,District Collector Vikas Deshmukh is now all set to forward the proposal to the government.
The gram panchayats of Chakan and Rajgurunagar and the Panchayat Samitis recently passed a resolution for inclusion of these areas under the municipal council.
The clamour for a municipal council status to Chakan and Rajgurunagar has been growing due to rapid industrialisation of the area and the proposed airport plan.
The panchayat samitis and zilla parishads also favoured the proposal. For an area to get the status of a municipal council, its population should be more than 15,000 and Chakan and Rajgurunagar fulfill the criteria with a population over 40,000.
Former town planner Ramchandra Gohad had said that if the government wants it can include the areas under municipal council within six months as per the Maharashtra Regional Town Planning Act. The areas for extension of Baramati council too has been put up before the government by the collector.
