Aspirations of engineering students shatter as Pune University exam dates clash with dates of Common Admission Test for IIMs

They were ready with their routine-to-follow and were getting their vocabulary right, along with updating themselves with their course studies, untill they realised that their preparation might go in vain. Given the fact that exam dates of engineering colleges, announced by University of Pune and the dates of Common Admission Test (CAT) by IIMs are clashing, many final year students are left with no choice other than waiting for another year.

Mohammed Rehan,a computer engineering student says,“Almost all engineering final year students, nowadays aspire to take up management studies. However, such a situation is a difficult one, where we have no choice other than being mute spectators while our hard work goes down the drain. We bought the form, prepared for it and are now made to choose between the semester exam and the competitive one. What after we complete our engineering in coming July? We will have to wait till 2011 to get into a management college.”

Ashish Jain,an electrical engineering student says,“I had chosen December 5 for my CAT exam date,as it will be a Saturday, but now I can’t appear for the test as I have my exam on the same day.”

University exams are being held from November 26 to December 10,while CAT is scheduled to begin from November 29 and conclude on December 7. While CAT dates were pre-decided,university exams, which were earlier scheduled to begin on October 30,were postponed to November 6 and then to November 24,due to closure of colleges because of swine flu and hence, incompletion of syllabus.

Shivaji Ahire, exam controller,UoP says,“We are facing statutory problems and therefore we can’t pre-pone the exams. And postponement is also difficult,as this will have an effect on forthcoming exam and batches. However, attempts are being made to take a decision that is in favour of students’ benefit.”

Saarthak Dutt,a student at MIT,says,“I had chosen December 6 for the exam, though it’s a Sunday, but I have my centre in Mumbai and I have my exams on the previous and the following day. So,it will difficult for me to prepare and appear for CAT. My obvious preference will be to the university exam,so chances of appearing for CAT are bleak.”

While students feel that the university should make adjustments in the date,Prasan Kamat, regional head,Career Launcher India Ltd,a coaching institute for MBA and GMAT,says that this year,CAT is spread over a period of nine days and it is sure to clash with some or the other university exams. It can’t be avoided totally.
