Building Pune: Boost for Katraj-Kondhwa road widening as civic body gets state fund
The project got delayed as land owners insisted on compensation in cash but the Pune Municipal Corporation couldn't provide it.

The much-delayed widening of the 3.5km Katraj-Kondhwa road is all set to get a boost with the Maharashtra government providing Rs 139.83 crore to the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) for acquiring land required for the project.
The foundation stone for the project was laid in 2018 with the intention of completing it in three years. “The project got delayed due to land acquisition issues. The land owners were not accepting compensation in the form of transfer of development rights and insisted on cash compensation. The civic body was unable to provide cash because it was in large amounts due to the high number of land owners seeking compensation for their plots,” said a civic officer.

PMC road department head Annirudha Pawaskar said the issue had to be raised with the state government. “The PMC has received funds from the state government for the acquisition of land for the project. The process will be completed soon for acquiring 4 lakh sq feet of land and the construction work will start,” he added.
The estimated cost of the road was Rs 192.43 crore in 2018. The 3.5km road is proposed to be 84 m wide and would pass via Rajas Society, Khadi Machine Chowk and Pisoli village. The road will have a 13.5 m carriageway, 7.5 m service road, cycle track of 3 m, utility corridor, footpath, storm-water line, angular parking in 5 m, 4.4 m for tree plantation and a drainage line on both sides.
The road will also have two vehicular underpasses, one pedestrian underpass, three grade separators, and bridge work on a nallah. The prime importance of the project is connecting Pune city and the Pune-Solapur NH-9. It is very useful for people around rapidly developing Katraj Kondhwa and nearby industrial, commercial and residential areas.

The road will provide an alternative to divert the traffic coming in Pune to travel between Satara and Solapur from the Pune-Solapur highway and the Pune-Satara highway. It will also provide an alternative option for the heavy traffic between Mumbai and Solapur.
