Inspired by the initiative of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to promote yoga, BJP corporator Manjusha Nagpure has taken up a project to install statues of 12 poses of Surya Namaskar at a popular civic garden. “Surya Namaskar originated in our country and is the best workout for human beings to remain healthy. Unfortunately, not many citizens follow it,” said Nagpure.
She said the prime minister has been able to promote yoga at the world stage, with United Nations general assembly passing a resolution proposed by him to declare June 21 as International Yoga Day. “The prime minister inspired me to take up the innovative project. I have been promoting yoga by organising events but statues of Surya Namaskar poses will be a permanent effort to promote the age-old workout.”
The statues will be installed at P L Deshpande garden as it is a popular garden. “Many citizens visit the garden for workout in the morning and it is the right place to promote Surya Namaskar,” she said.
The fibre-made statues will have an average height of five feet six inches and will spread knowledge among people on the right way of doing the asanas, said Digambar Bangar, deputy engineer, PMC.
He added, “There will be as many as 12 statues in sequence performing the Surya Namaskar. The local corporator has issued an amount of Rs 5 lakh for the project. If there is shortage of funds, the garden department will pay to complete the project.”
The civic body plans to install the statues by March-end, he said.
