With the start of the new academic year (2011-12),college teachers and non-teaching staff under the University of Pune (UoP) will not have to sign the muster any more. In a bid to have more transparency in the academic system,biometric system will be used to mark attendance of teachers.
According to a circular issued by M L Jadhav,registrar of UoP,all the 628 UoP-affiliated colleges and departments on the varsity campus will have to install a biometric system before March 31,2011.
“The management council of the varsity took this decision last month as per the guidelines prescribed by the government resolution (GR) issued on October 27,2010,which says that the state government as well as semi-state controlled offices should adapt biometric system for attendance,” the circular stated.
“The idea is to keep a check on teachers. The biometric system will provide exact information on whether the employee was actually present or not. With the biometric system in place,the employee has to be present physically in the college and cannot mark proxy attendance,” said R V Keerdak,director of state higher education department.
W N Gade,director of board of college and university development of UoP,said the colleges had to make allocations for installing the biometric system on their own. “The varsity will also install the system on its campus soon. We will either tie up with a private partner or develop a system on our own,” he said.
