Bike knocked down by truck at Pune’s Gangadham Chowk; woman killed, father-in-law injured
The Pune police detained the truck driver and are set to book him for culpable homicide.

(Express photo) A 29-year-old woman riding a pillion on a bike was killed, and her 61-year-old father-in-law, who was riding the two-wheeler, was seriously injured after their vehicle was hit by a truck on the busy Gangadham Chowk in Pune Wednesday morning. The police have detained the truck driver.
The accident took place around 11.15 am in the Market Yard area of Pune. The police identified the deceased as Deepali Yuvraj Soni and her injured father-in-law as Jagdish Pannalal Soni. The accident was caught on CCTV cameras installed at the busy traffic junction.
“Initial probe suggests that when a bunch of vehicles started moving after getting a green signal, the goods-carrying truck hit the bike from behind. Due to the impact, both the rider and the pillion rider fell from the bike. Deepali sustained very grievous injuries and was believed to have died on the spot. Her father-in-law sustained a serious fracture and is being treated at a hospital. His condition is stable. On-duty police responded to the accident, and the family members of the deceased were informed,” said Inspector Manisha Patil of the Marketyard police station.
Inspector Patil added, “We have seized the truck and detained the driver, identified as Shaukatali Papalal Kulkundi, a resident of Bhawani Peth in Pune. He has undergone a medical examination. We are in the process of registering an offence under the charges of culpable homicide as per the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. We will also be initiating discussion with the Pune Municipal Corporation to ensure that such accidents do not take place in the future.”
In a similar accident in June last year in the same area, A 59-year-old woman was killed, and her 37-year-old daughter-in-law was critically injured after the bike they were riding was hit by a dumper truck near Gangadham Chowk. The police arrested the 37-year-old driver of the dumper.
