The Bharatiya Janata Party on Tuesday held agitations demanding the winding up of the Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) for its total failure so far. Vehemently opposing the public transport system, the party office-bearers said it was forced on the citizens and was a total waste of Rs 78 crore. They collected thousands of signatures from passers-by.

The sit-in agitation was held at six different points on the BRTS route starting from Hadapsar to Katraj. In between, the agitation was held at Swargate chowk,Laxminarayan chowk,Panchami Hotel chowk and Bibwewadi. The party workers will also form a human chain at 10 am on February 22.

City unit chief of BJP Girish Bapat, city general secretary Yogesh Gogawale, corporators Anil Shirole,Ujwal Keskar,Vikas Mathkari and Dilip Umbarkar were also present. Renowned cartoonist Mangesh Tendulkar and civic activist S C N Jatar also took part in it.

Last week, the BJP had alleged that the BRT project has been imposed on the city with a political motive. “Congress forced it upon the citizens and we have wasted huge sum of money on the project, which has claimed no less than 27 lives so far. Hence our demand is that this fatal system should be completely stopped,” the BJP office bearers had said.

BJP corporator Ujwal Keskar said,”During the agitation,we managed to collect about 15,000 signatures from citizens. The project was hastily implemented by the civic administration at the insistence of Congress, without a detailed project report (DPR) and therefore we are demanding a complete closure of it.”

He said that Municipal Commissioner Praveensinh Pardeshi has convened a meeting with the BJP to discuss the issue.
