At Baramati NaMo job fair, fewer than expected employers participated, 1285 aspirants received final offers

Although as many as 55,072 ‘jobs’ were up for grabs at the NaMo Maharozgar Melava organised by the state government in Baramati on March 2-3, only 22,048 aspirants visited the two-day fair, of whom only 1,285 got employment with the participating firms. As per official data, 10,652 others have been shortlisted by the firms and will have to undergo further rounds of selection.

The two-day job fair, which was high on spectacle with grand arrangements and participation of Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy CMs Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar, was held by the Department of Skills, Employment, Entrepreneurship and Innovation of the Government of Maharashtra.

According to data provided by the organisers, total 222 employers participated in the fair, against the 345 employers who had earlier registered for the fair. While 164 employers attended the fair on the first day, 58 employers participated in the mega job fair on the second day.

On the first day, as many as 18,754 job aspirants visited the fair, of whom 8,713 were shortlisted by the employers while 1,073 others were made a final offer of employment. On the second day, 3,294 job seekers visited the fair, of whom 1,846 were shortlisted and 292 others were made final offer of employment. The organisers said that the shortlisted candidates would have to go through a further rounds of selection.

Anupama Pawar, Deputy Commissioner of Skill Development, Employment and Entrepreneurship, said that though the number of employers attending the event were lower than anticipated, the job offers and the shortlisting were however satisfactory, considering that the fair was held at a tehsil headquarters.

“It’s a good achievement. At a time when Class 10 and 12 exams are going on, attendance of 22,000 candidates , shortlisting of 10,000 of them and final selection of 1,285 is more than satisfactory. At a job fair organised at the tehsil level, it’s a success,” said Pawar. The Deputy Commissioner said those who have been shortlisted by the companies will be called for further rounds of selections. “We will be in touch with them and keep a tab on their progress,” said Pawar.

The NaMo Maharozgar Melavas have drawn ire from activists, who have criticized the high expenditure (over Rs 5 crore for each event) and the low quality of jobs as over 60 % of the jobs on offer are of ‘traineeships and apprenticeships.’

Pawar said job aspirants have been placed in firms operating in automobile, manufacturing, sales, banking, and marketing areas. “The salary that the employers would pay would be higher than the minimum wage which differs for various categories of candidates – unskilled, semi-skilled, and skilled. Information about actual salaries offered has not shared with us,” said Pawar.
