An investigation into the illegal stay of the five tailors from Bangladesh arrested from Pune’s Bhosari this week has revealed that two of them procured Indian passports from Pune and used it for going abroad, said the Pimpri Chinchwad police.
Acting on a tip-off, the anti-terrorist cell of the Pimpri Chinchwad police arrested Shamim Nurol Rana, 26; Raj alias Samrat Adhikari, 27; Jaleel Noor Shaikh alias Jaleel Noormohammad Goldar, 38; Wasim Aziz Ul-Haq Mandal alias Wasim Heera, 26; and Azad Shamshul Shaikh alias Abul Kalam Fakir, 32 – all natives of Bangladesh on May 26.
They were arrested from a tailoring firm in Shanti Nagar area of Bhosari, said assistant inspector V D Raut who heads the probe team.
Police said Indian passports were seized from accused Shamim Rana who came to India illegally about 10 years ago and Jaleel Noor Shaikh. Using the Indian passport, Jaleel travelled to Bangladesh to meet his family members, while Shamim flew to Dubai for some work, an officer told The Indian Express.
“With the help of agents, Jaleel allegedly procured Indian Aadhaar card, PAN card and other documents and worked in Mumbai for a few years before settling down as an Indian citizen in Pimpri Chinchwad,” he said, adding that Rana procured the passport from Pune in 2019.
The police have also seized a photograph of Bangladesh passport from the cell phone of Azad Shaikh.
Assistant inspector Raut said that all the five infiltrated into India at different periods in the last few years by crossing the international border in West Bengal without seeking essential government permission.
Prima-facie, the police suspect that the accused came to India for employment. But, since all the five suspects in the case belong to different areas in Bangladesh and infiltrated to India at different periods, a probe is on to know how they systematically started working as tailors at the same tailoring firm in Bhosari, the investigators said.
“We have got documents proving that all the five accused are originally Bangladeshi citizens. They were illegally residing in Bhosari by pretending to be Indian citizens using fake Indian documents like Aadhaar cards, PAN cards, fake birth certificates and school leaving certificates, which we have recovered. It was also found they were making mobile phone calls frequently to Bangladesh,” said Pimpri Chinchwad Deputy Commissioner of Police Shivaji Pawar.
A court had remanded the five suspects to police custody initially till May 29 and later till May 31 for further investigation.
Search is on for the persons who helped the alleged Bangladeshi intruders procure Indian identity documents.
The police also suspect that the accused were regularly sending money earned in India to their families in Bangladesh. A probe into the financial transactions of the accused is on, the police said.
The FIR in this case was lodged at the Bhosari police station. The accused were booked under sections 420, 465, 468, 471, 34 of the Indian Penal Code and various sections of the Foreigners Act and Passport Act by the Pimpri Chinchwad police. Police sub inspector Ashok Kendra is investigating the case.
