A “Facebook friend” brought a 19-year-old Bangladeshi girl to India by flight on assurances of providing treatment for her skin disease, but later forced her into prostitution at a brothel in Pune’s Budhwar Peth area. The girl was rescued by the Pune City police on Monday.

Police Havaldar Reshma Kank of the social security cell (SSC) of Pune City police crime branch has lodged the First Information Report (FIR) in this case at the Faraskhana police station.

Police have arrested the brothel keeper Lakhi alias Sweety Akbar Shaikh (34) under sections 370, 34 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and sections of the Prevention of Immoral Trafficking Act (PITA). Police have also booked the victim’s “Facebook friend”, who is actually a woman working as a flesh trade agent identified as Meena alias Seema. She is on the run.

Acting on a tip-off, a SSC team headed by senior police inspector Bharat Jadhav and assistant inspectors Aniket Pote, Ashwini Patil, Rajesh Malgave, raided the brothel operating from the “Begum building” in Budhwar Peth on Monday night.

Police rescued the 19-year-old Bangladeshi girl, who was forced into sex racket at the brothel. Probe revealed the victim came in contact with Meena alias Seema over “Facebook” a few months before.

Police said the victim wanted treatment for some skin disease. “The sex racketeer pretending to be a friend claimed to know a good doctor in India who can cure the victim’s skin disease. The victim agreed to come with her to India. Accordingly, about two months back, the racketeer brought the victim from Bangladesh to Kolkata by a flight on a tourist visa. Then, from Kolkata they came to Pune by another flight. The racketeer forced her into prostitution at the brothel in Budhwar Peth,” said assistant police inspector Aniket Pote.

“Rescued girl would be sent back to Bangladesh as per the legal procedure. We found her passport and other documents,” said Pote.

Meanwhile, during the same raid, police arrested seven women allegedly hailing from Bangladesh from the brothel. Police said these women infiltrated into India illegally by crossing the international border at West Bengal and later were lured into prostitution business at the Begum building in Budhwar Peth.

A separate FIR was lodged against these seven Bangladeshi women under sections of the Passport Act and Foreigners Act. As per the FIR, the accused women came to India separately without essential permissions and documents in a span of last four years. Further investigation is on to know how and with whose help they crossed the India-Bangladesh border and then reached Pune.

In a similar action, the Pune city police had on September 12 arrested seven more Bangladeshi nationals and have also rescued a minor girl, who is also from Bangladesh, from the brothels in Budhwar Peth. Police said a flesh trade agent from Bangladesh had lured the minor girl to India on assurance of a beauty parlour job.

“The agent had brought the girl to Kolkata by crossing the international river border between India and Bangladesh illegally on September 2. Then the agent had sold the girl to another sex racketeer in Kolkata for Rs 2 lakhs. The racketeer further forced the girl into prostitution at a brothel in Pune,” said senior inspector Bharat Jadhav.

Also, on September 1, police had arrested as many as 19 Bangladeshi nationals, including nine women, from a brothel in the Budhwar Peth. Police said all 19 Bangladeshis knew each other. They came to Pune separately by illegally entering India about a month before their arrest. While the women were allegedly doing prostitution in Budhwar Peth brothels, the men were found to be working as hawkers selling different items in the same area.
