Arrested “bookie” Kishore Lalchand Badlani alias Keshu Pune (38) is a history-sheeter,police said. He had been arrested by the Pune city police on two previous occasions for his alleged involvement in cricket betting. Pune police have not, however, been able to confirm that he had any links with the D-company aides or bookies in Pakistan.

In the most recent case,he was arrested by the social security cell of Pune police crime branch in January 2013 for his alleged involvement in betting during the India-Pakistan One Day International match.

A crime branch team, led by senior inspector Bhanupratap Barge, had raided the Sugnani Mentions building on M G Road in Pimpri Camp and arrested four bookies – Dinesh alias Gugu Lohana (41),Rajesh Ramani (38),Manoj Sugnani (42) and Haresh Nasha,(20). Kishore Badlani was also booked under the Mumbai Gambling Act,along with three others – Ramesh Mirani (51),Ram Bajaj (39) and Anil Jevrani (43),Pimpri. They are all residents of Pimpri.

Police arrested Badlani and Mirani on January 18,while Jevrani was arrested on January 28. Police had seized two LCD television sets,10 mobile phones, one laptop, two set-top boxes, some cash and a register. The total worth of the seized items was estimated at Rs 66,200. An offence had been registered at Pimpri police station.

During investigation, police had processed the mobile phone call details of all the suspects. Since they found no substantial evidence against Badlani,he was released on bail.

Badlani was also arrested in a cricket betting case by the Pimpri police in March 2011.

Police suspect that Badlani came in contact with a bookie who had been to his spare parts shop in Wakad. He worked under this bookie for a while and later started his own betting business.

Badlani has now come to be known as one of the top bookies in Pune, among the 30-odd ones who are in touch with bookies in Pakistan and Dubai through cell phones “arranged” by a Ramesh Vyas.

Mumbai police had last week arrested Badlani’s aides Dinesh Sharma and Kishor Pablani from Pune. Badlani, by going on a Europe tour with his family,is suspected to have evaded arrest.

Meanwhile on May 22,a Pune police crime branch team, led by inspector Sunil Tambe, arrested four persons from a Kaylani Nagar apartment for their alleged involvement in a betting racket during the Indian Premier Leagure (IPL) T20 match between Rajasthan Royals and Hyderabad Sunrisers. A bookie who went by the name Babubhai Mirchandani (53) was arrested in that case on May 27.

In another similar case, five persons were arrested during a raid at a hotel in Pimpri area on May 26. Police had seized 19 cell phones, computer, laptop, cell phone chargers, two dairies and cash of Rs 29,500 from the suspects. The main suspect,Ram Bajaj, was arrested a few days later. Cash worth Rs 2.1 lakh was seized from his house. Police in Pune had, however, not been able to establish a rock solid case against Badlani.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (zone III) Shahji Umap said,“Mumbai police have not shared any information about Badlani with us. He is a history-sheeter and has been arrested twice in betting cases by Pimpri police.”
