The evening downpour, along with the administrations alleged callousness spelt doom for the mother and daughter, who had accompanied their other family members, including womans husband,on a trip to Mahabaleshwar and its neighbourng areas.
Their pleasure trip turned into a nightmare, when the car they were travelling in,got stuck in rainwater that had collected in and around the new Katraj tunnel due to debris and landfills from the illegal constructions allegedly taking place on NHAI land.
According to reports, the womans husband and other relatives managed to push open the vehicle door and flee. But the woman and her daughter were not so lucky.
While the womans body was fished out by local residents on Friday morning, the baby is still missing.
Sources said some landfills were allegedly created by a private firm and a hotel to use the stretch of land as an access road to a couple of unauthorised construction sites on the hillock.
But the private firms director claimed the accident had nothing to do with their constructions, even while admitting that the legitimacy of those constructions was still not confirmed.
The large amount of debris from the hilltop is causing waterlogging and huge jams. As a temporary measure,we have put up barricades to prevent further mishaps from taking place, NHAI project director Rajesh Kaundal said.
