Renowned Marathi author, Aruna Dhere, will chair the 92nd All India Marathi Literary Meet, which will be organised at Yavatmal from January 11 to 13 next year. Pune-based Dhere is known for her short stories, novels and critical essays.
The president of Sahitya Mahamandal, Shripad Bhalchandra Joshi, declared Dhere’s name during a meeting held in Yavatmal on Sunday. This was for the first time that a chairperson had been elected from the names proposed through various member of the body, instead of a voting process.
Dhere is the fifth woman to have been selected to the chair of the literary meet. During the 1961 edition, which was held in Gwalior, author Kusumavati Deshpande had chaired the meet. In 1975, the event was held in Karad and author Durga Bhagwat was selected to preside over the meet. In 1996, the programme was organised in Alandi and poetess Shanta Shelke had presided over the convention and in 2001, when it was held in Indore, where Vijaya Rajadhyaksh had chaired it.
