German Bakery blast Convict Himayat Baig got a DEd in 2006,finished BA from Poona College in 08.
Mirza Himayat Baig had trained in Pune to be a teacher but ended up being convicted and sentenced to death in the German Bakery blast case in the same city. Baig had done his DEd in 2006 and BA from Poona College in 2008,he had told the court during trial.
However,he allegedly got involved in radical activities in the city.
The ATS had said Baig was connected to a module of the banned Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) the agency had busted in August 2008.

Members of the module included Feroz Mehboob Pathan of Ghorpadi Peth,Imtiyaz Babymiyan Shaikh,Ayaz Khan,both from Bhimpura Camp,Mohammed Bilal Kagzi of Surat and Nadim Mohammed Salim Shaikh of Thane,the ATS had said. It had later arrested Indian Mujahideen (IM) operative Maulana Shabbir Hussain Gangawali,a native of Bhatkal in Karnataka,from Janwadi in the SIMI module case.
According to the ATS,during his student days in Pune,Baig and Gangawali conducted meetings of Muslim youth in Pune,circulated jehadi literature and indoctrinated them. The meetings were held at a mosque on Solapur Road and some other places,the ATS had stated.
Baig was arrested in the SIMI module case in 2011. ATS had said that his interrogation revealed that jehadi literature was published at Meera Road in Thane,stored at an apartment in Kondhwa and circulated among Muslim youth in Pune by members of the module.

Baig allegedly got acquainted with terror operatives first at his native place in Beed. According to ATS,he became a friends with terror suspects Abdul Aziz Abdul Zameer,Khalid Ibrahim Akib Ahmed,Shaikh Vikar Mohammed Shaikh Nisar,Afriz Khan Shahid Khan Pathan,Mohammed Samad Samsherkhan,Zabiuddin Ansari alias Zabi alias Abu Jundal,Fayaz Kagzi and Shaikh Izaz,all from Beed,whose names cropped up in the Aurangabad RDX haul of 2006.
ATS also claimed that Baig,Fayyaz and Jundal were instrumental in setting up a library that become a meeting point indoctrinating youth into jehadi ideology. Jundal (who was extradited last year) and Kagzi had fled the country after their name cropped up in the Aurangabad RDX Haul. The duo had allegedly trained Baig in Colombo in Sri Lanka in March 2008 to assemble explosive devices and cause their explosion,states the ATS chargesheet in the german Bakery case.
State LeT chief with 5 names,25 email ids
The ATS had said that after returning from Colombo,Baig settled in Udgir,a remote and nondescript place. Alleged to be the LeT head for Maharashtra,Baig was a key link between LeT and IM,according to the ATS,which said he started Global Internet Cafe in Udgir and with the help of about 25 email IDs,kept in touch with the accused wanted in the Aurangabad arms haul case. The ATS said that he used five aliases and that he went as Yusuf and Hasan in Udgir,and acquired two bogus election cards in the name of Kayyum Ayub Shaikh and Immadoddin Ahmed Shaikh besides a bogus handicapped person card.
German Bakery conspiracy
IM operatives Yasin Bhatkal and Mohsin Choudhary,on the instructions of Riyaz and Iqbal Bhatkal,allegedly met Baig in Udgir to finalise their plan to plant a bomb at German Bakery in January 2010. On their instructions,Baig carried out a recce of the German Bakery on January 31,2010,the ATS had stated.
The ATS states that Yasin and Choudhary held a meeting with Baig in Udgir in the first week of February to give finishing touches to the plan and a bomb was assembled by the duo with the help of Baig at Global Internet Cafe at Udgir,between 1 am and 5 pm on February 7.
On February 8,Baig went to Mumbai and stayed at a lodge where he identified himself as Yusuf Mohammed Isaque of Udgir,purchased two haversacks and a second cell phone from Mumbai,which were used in the German Bakery blast on February 13,the ATS had said.
The ATS said Baig kept his cell phone in Mumbai with a person,who was a witness in the case,to give the impression his location was Mumbai. On February 12,he kept two cell phones at the house of a witness in Aurangabad to mislead investigators,the ATS had said. This witness knew Baig as Yusuf and he collected his cell phones from him around 10.30 pm on February 13,the day the blast occurred,according to the ATS.
This witness told the court that Yusuf looked very tired and told him he had travelled a long distance on motorbike. The ATS had stated that on February 13,Baig and Yasin carried the explosive device in a private vehicle from Udgir to Latur and in a state transport bus from Latur to Pune. The duo,the ATS stated,hailed an autorickshaw to travel from Poolgate bus stand to Pune Railway Station and from there to Central Mall in another autorickshaw. Yasin planted the bomb in a haversack at the bakery around 5 pm and triggered it with a mobile triggering device at 6.50 pm, the ATS chargesheet states.
