The Army Sports Institute (ASI) definitely seems to be aiming for gold at 2016 Olympics thanks to the scientific approach to its training. In a first, the ASI is also working towards fielding sportsmen for fencing event in the Olympics. The sport,ASI officials said, has not been represented for at Olympics by India so far.

“A fencing hall has been approved at ASI for Rs 5.3 crore and is likely to come up in two years. Services teams have been giving 100 per cent towards fencing at the national level,” said Colonel P S Cheema, commandant,ASI. The institute today has 30 sportsmen who are being trained for Olympics. “We started fencing in 2008 and plan to send four fencers. By 2020 we want to bag medals,” said Naib Subedar Ashwani Kumar, fencing coach at ASI. The sportsmen have already bagged bronze medal in Junior Commonwealth Games and Asian Championships a year ago.

ASI’s Mission Olympics has been constituted to win medals at the Olympics in six events: archery, athletics, boxing, diving, weight lifting and wrestling. “10-12 sportsmen will participate in the Indian contingent in 2016 Olympics from ASI. We hope to win medals,” said Cheema. “In Boys’ Sports Company we have a capacity of 30 sportsmen per stream. So against a total capacity of 210,we have 122 sportsmen. We are undersubscribed,” Cheema added.
