How many times have we heard the phrase,‘They don’t make music like they used to in the 80s’. It is this love for rock n’ roll that has brought together five musicians to form Hellwind,a new classic metal and hard rock band based in Mumbai. The band recently released its first single,’Taste Of Metal’ online on Soundcloud and has received almost 3000 hits within a month. “We were obviously very excited and happy about the response to the track,” says Sahil Makhija, the drummer.

The members,Akshay Deodhar,Rajarshi Bhattacharya,Kiron Kumar,Aditya Kadam and Sahil Makhija are all accomplished musicians, with Deodhar,Kadam and Makhija also performing with well-known bands in Mumbai such as Demonic Resurrection,Workshop,Spook and Zephyr. “We’re all members of different bands in completely different genres. Hellwind is our fun band where we come together to play the music that we love and have grown up with. We try to combine the aggression of heavy metal with the powerful music and melody in hard rock,” says Makhija.

Barely two-month old,the band Hellwind will perform in the city on Thursday at Hard Rock Café. The performance,as they claim, holds the promise of old school music. Elaborating about the performance, says Kumar,“Expect the theatrics of KISS,the hooks of Def Leppard, the melodies of Poison, the groove of Van Halen and the banshee wails of Judas Priest.”

“We will be playing covers of the bands that we love and will also be playing two original songs – Taste Of Metal and a new, unreleased song,Legends. Every rock band in the 80s had their power ballads and Legends is ours. It’s romantic,it’s grand, even pompous,” adds Deodhar.

To add to the delight of the audience, the band will also be performing songs by George Michael and Boney M – with a metal spin. “This is our tribute to these artistes and their music. The songs will be amped up,with heavier drum beats and it’s our vision of how Boney M would sound if they were a metal band,” says Kadam.

Following their gig in Pune, the band also has another performance at Hard Rock Cafe,in Mumbai,on the 28th. “After the performances,we have some time off to write new songs and by our third performance,we should have more original songs,” says Bhattacharya. Besides, the band also plans to record an EP or a full length song soon.

Makhija sums up that the band’s music is not restricted to metal and rock fans but for everyone who wants to have fun, drink a beer.
