A group of Army men entered into an ugly brawl with policemen and civilians on Tuesday night when they were prevented by on-duty traffic cops at Alka Chowk from crossing the Sambhaji Bridge on two-wheelers that are banned on the bridge. The Army men later allegedly beat traffic cops, policemen and journalists.
According to DCP Dnyaneshwar Phadtare,at 9 pm two Young Officers (YOs) from the College of Military Engineering went on Sambhaji Bridge from the Garware Chowk side on motorcycles. When lady constables Latika Maner and Sunita Borude stopped them at the Alka Chowk, they got into an argument with them. The YOs were then taken to a police chowkey where one of them started beating the policemen and broke window panes and glass table top at the chowkey.
The traffic cops then contacted the control room which sent additional force to the spot. But soon two-three Army trucks carrying armed jawans arrived at the spot and joined the brawl. The jawans reportedly beat up the cops and onlookers. They also beat up mediapersons, who had reached the spot, and tried to snatch their cameras.
DCP Sanjay Jadhav,DCP Makrand Ranade,DCP (Traffic) Vishwas Pandhare reached the spot to control the situation. Ram Anuj Singh, second in command of military police, also reached the spot.
The process of lodging a complaint against the YOs by policemen and journalists was on till late night.
