Pune girl Ankita Raina continued her dream run,beating third seed Nigina Abdurakhimova of Uzbekistan to reach the semifinals of the $25,000 ITF Womens tennis tournament in Karshi,Uzbekistan.
The world number 455 and currently Indias highest ranked player hammered Abdurakhimova 6-4,7-6 (7/3). The 20-year-old who is supported by sports NGO,Lakshya in association with Bharat Forge trains at PYC Gymkhana under Hemant Bendrey.
My confidence level was really good. Against Abdurakhimova,I was striking the ball well from the start and the pressure built on her as she was the local favourite, said Raina from Karshi.
This was Raina’s best performance in a 25,000USD event.
However,Raina said that a bigger test awaited her on Friday. This is my first semifinal at this stage and I dont want to think about winning or losing. I want to give my best tomorrow and if I manage to do that,the result will come, she said.
