An ‘online’ exam but students from afar will have to reach city

Is it really an online exam? That’s what students are asking as the University of Pune gets ready with its plan to conduct its online exam for the first time.

Is it really an online exam? That’s what students are asking as the University of Pune (UoP) gets ready with its plan to conduct its online exam for the first time. The university has been saying this will be the first time the entrance exam will be held online. Students as well as some university officials are asking if it is an online exam, how come students from across the country being made to come all the way to Pune.

About 40 centres across the city are being shortlisted for the exam.

According to UGC guidelines, entrance exams were made mandatory for PhD aspirants on July 11,2009. Following this, the university conducted the first exam on February 14,2010 and the second on February 21,2011. This year,so far,no exam was conducted because of lack of guides. This is the first time that aspirants are appearing for the online exam for PhD.

Some officials of the university said having an online exam where students would have to come to Pune did not make any sense. “From the start of the year, the university has been making tall claims about how they will be conducting the first ever online test. But conducting an online exam would mean that the students would get the liberty to appear for it from anywhere across the country, which is not the case currently,” said a senior varsity official.

The university is shortlisting about 40 colleges across the city as exam centres. “We are still shortlisting the colleges,” said Wasudev Gade, director,Board of College and University Development (BCUD).

When asked about the confusion regrading the online exam,Gade said,“We are not able to conduct it across the country because we do not have the infrastructure now. This year,it’s a trial and next year,we’ll try to conduct it across the country.”

Gajanan Ekbote, senior senate member, said,“An exam like this cannot be called an online exam. If the students are coming to Pune to appear for the exam,it is as good as any other exam. The lack of infrastructure should not be an excuse for not being able to make the test completely online because they had announced about plans of making the test online at the beginning of the year.”

The first paper of the exam will be held on December 17. The UoP will also put up a sample test paper on its website by November 28.
