Purav Raja and Karan Rastogi caused upsets by defeating higher ranked opponents to move into the second round of the $15000 Deccan Gymkhana-AITA Men’s ITF Tennis Futures organized by the Deccan Gymkhana Club under the aegis of AITA at the Deccan Gymkhana tennis courts.

In the biggest upset of the day,unseeded Raja knocked out third seeded and 379th ranked Vishnu Vardhan 5-7,7-6(5),6-4 in a 2 hr 16 minute battle. Former Davis Cupper Karan Rastogi was a little rusty,coming back after a long lay off due to injury. However he still managed to upset seventh seeded Divij Sharan to move into the next round. He beat Sharan 6-4,6-2 in a 1 hr 26 minute match which he dominated right from the start. Top seed Daniel King Turner of New Zealand survived a scare to move on to the second round of the tournament. Ranked 317 th in the world,played a marathon battle against India’s N Prashanth. He came back from a set down to beat the Indian 4-6,6-2,6-3 in a battle that lasted for nearly two hours.

In another interesting tussle local lad Ronak Manuja gave a spirited display before going down to Fourth seeded Young Jun Kim of Korea,Kim won 6-4,6-4. With this ended the local challenge at the event. Ranjeet Virali –Murugesan,on the other hand,scored an impressive 6-4,7-6(2) win over qualifier Cheng Peng Hsieh of Chinese Taipei. Other seeds in action second seed Alexander Satschko of Germany,sixth seeded Rohan Gajjar,eighth seeded and runners-up at last week’s Kolkatta Futures Rupesh Roy along with Christopher Marquis and Gilles D’souza of France also moved into the last sixteen of the singles.
