Ayurveda blames excess of vata dosha (an imbalance of air in the body) for pain. The increase in air movements results in low metabolism and,at times,blocks the normal functioning of the body. One of the imperative reasons for arthritis and other pains in neck,body,knees and joints are due to the swelling in the joints created by toxic mucous. According to Smita Naram,Co-founder of Ayushakti,joint pain,swelling and stiffness are the direct result of increased vata movements in the body. A planned diet that decreases the vata can help to better these conditions. Following World Arthritis Day,which was observed on September 12,the expert spelled out foods that help reduce vata in the body. These include rice,rotis and bakharis made from green and white millets or ragi,moong dal,red lentils,yellow lentils,pumpkin,gourd,bitter gourd,carrot,beetroot,coriander,onion,fenugreek,zucchini,artichoke,squashes,fennel bulb,rucola,celery,spinach,melon and cantaloupe. Naram also advised that drinking one teaspoon of castor oil with ginger water before going to bed is an effective way of keeping joint pain and arthritis at bay. She added that another proven anti-arthritic formula is having a mix comprising a teaspoon of turmeric,a quarter teaspoon of garlic,a quarter teaspoon of ajwain,half-a-teaspoon of powdered coriander seeds and half-a-teaspoon of fenugreek with half glass water,twice a day.
